It was brought up to me just after I’d done that film that I’d had a bad time on. I just didn’t want to do it. I didn’t want to sign up for a trilogy. I thought it would be too intense. And now people are like “Do you regret it?” But I could not have handled what Robert [Pattinson] and Kristen [Stewart] had to go through. I couldn’t handle it. I’ve only had a few instances when people have taken my photo when I’m walking outside. Why do you care? I can’t stand seeing magazine covers. I hate trashy magazines. Celebrity cellulite. Fuck you! At 18, I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do with my life. So I needed to stop and think about it. Committing to play Bella meant a bind to at least five films. So I declined without hesitation really: I was not ready for that commitment. And today, I do not really regret anything. —Emily Browning on why she refused to play Bella Swan.

I didn’t turn it down. I was never offered the role. I was asked to audition and I declined because I’d just done a horror film, The Uninvited, which had wrecked me, physically and emotionally, and I wanted to take another break. I wasn’t ready to be involved in a trilogy.

No, [I don’t regret it]. I made a good decision for me. The way the media treats the Twilight cast, I know I wouldn’t have been able to handle that attention at that age. I would have gone a little bit insane.
